The French Continue to Blaze New Wine Trails in Oregon - A Long History

A group of accomplished winegrowers and winemakers who saw the potential in Oregon for the finest Pinot Noir in the world. Robert Drouhin, the Chairman of Maison Joseph Drouhin from 1957 to 2003, established the first Burgundy presence in Oregon 32 years ago in 1987, Domaine Drouhin Oregon

The French are intrigued with the opportunity in Oregon as Jean-Nicolas Meo from Nicolas-Jay Winery in Oregon's Willamette Valley has noted, they are excited by the idea of taking what they have learned from the grands and premiere crus of Burgundy and applying it to a new region, a new climate, new soils, and new vineyards. There also is the attraction of building something from scratch.

A Very Special Thanksgiving Experience With The Founders

Oregon's wine history stretches back to the early 1840's. The Oregon wine industry, likewise in the rest of the country shut down during the Prohibition era, but resumed in 1933.

Rebirth of the Oregon wine industry. The Oregon wine industry started to rebuild in the 1960's. Hillcrest Vineyard, established in 1961 by Richard Sommer with the first vintage appearing for sale in 1964. Richard planted the first Pinot Noir grapes in Oregon that was commercially available in the 1967 vintage. David Lett and Charles Coury were next to plant Pinot Noir. In 1966, Lett planted a vineyard in the hills of Dundee called Eyrie Vineyards that may have ignited the first flame that cast the light on Oregon's wine.

In 1970, Oregon had five bonded wineries, with 35 acres in production. Many out-of-state winemakers, the bulk from California, began migrating to Oregon, including Dick Erath from Erath Winery, Dick and Nancy Ponzi of Ponzi Vineyards, the Vuylsteke Family of Oak Knoll, Susan and Bill Sokol Blosser of Sokol Blosssr Winery, David and Jinny Adelshiem of Adelshiem Winery, Pat and Joe Campbell of Elk Grove Vineyards, and Jerry and Ann Preston and Myron Redford of Amity Vineyards.

On this 2-day tour you will visit the founders vineyards and wineries, barrel tasting, reserve wine tasting, dine as Guests with the winemaker, stay at a Vineyard Estate House, Inn or B&B, and more.

September in Oregon's Willamette Valley.

Can't join us for one of our one or two day tour Thanksgiving wine tours? Take part in our half day wine experience! You will visit Bergstrom Wines where you will be welcomed by your hostess with a taste of Champagne while she takes you exploring the biodynamic practices of their vineyard and garden programs, all while enjoying views of the Willamette Valley. Next, your hostess will guide you through the Bergstrom story and a tasting of their limited-production estate wines, including a selection of library wines. Each Ekollon Experience includes a lunch pairing menu designed by Josh and Caroline Bergstrom featuring seasonal, locally sourced, gourmet bites.

After a great wine pairing experience at Bergstrom, it is time to settle into a relaxing mid-afternoon at Beaux Freres.   While on vacation in 1986, Michael Etzel came upon an 88-acre pig farm  for sale located on Ribbon Ridge in the Northern Willamette Valley,  Yamhill County, Oregon. After some deliberation, Michael purchased the  farm with his brother-in-law (the French idiom is "beaux frères"),  Robert Parker, Jr.

We’ll be back to your accommodations by 3:30 pm.
